Taking care of young trees

Young trees benefit from a little extra care, especially if they have been transplanted.(1) Proper watering helps them develop healthy root systems that support the rest of the tree’s growth. (2)Application of organic mulch helps retain moisture, and build soil life. If you do have lawn over the trees roots aerating helps ensure the grass doesn’t hog the nutrients before the tree roots get them. (3)Smooth bark trees in direct sun should be protected in the winter to prevent sun scald, and to keep rodents from chewing them.

In general trees should be protected from excessive road salt, high amounts of synthetic fertilizer, ground compaction, and physical damage from lawn mowers etc.

With a little care, and nature’s help many young trees will be there for our kids and grandkids!
